What this trial studies
At Suhul General Hospital in Tigray, about 1,260 adult outpatients will be screened with the AUDIT and those scoring 8–19 will be block-randomized to an intervention or control group. The intervention group will receive simple advice, brief counseling, and a brochure, with follow-up AUDIT screening at 6 and 12 months to track changes. Outcomes will compare reductions in unhealthy alcohol use between groups over one year. The trial targets conflict-affected, post-war outpatients to inform interventions in similar public hospital settings.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults (18+) attending public outpatient clinics in Tigray with AUDIT scores of 8–19 and no serious medical or psychiatric illnesses.
Not a fit: Patients with AUDIT scores below 8 or 20 and above, or those with serious medical or mental illnesses, are unlikely to receive benefit from this brief intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the approach could lower hazardous drinking and related health and social harms among conflict-affected outpatients.
How similar studies have performed: Brief interventions have reduced hazardous drinking in many primary-care trials, but their effectiveness in conflict-affected populations like Tigray is not well established.
