What this trial studies

This observational study aims to assess the rate of lung cancer detection in individuals who are first-degree relatives of lung cancer patients. It will involve screening 1,520 participants using low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) of the thorax, along with detailed questionnaires to gather relevant health information. The study seeks to identify early-stage lung cancer in this high-risk group, particularly focusing on the unique demographic of female never-smokers in Hong Kong. The primary outcome will be the number of lung cancers detected through this screening process.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 50-75 who are first-degree relatives of lung cancer patients, regardless of their smoking status.

Not a fit: Patients who are non-Chinese or those who have known lung cancer prior to the study will not benefit from this screening.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to earlier detection of lung cancer in individuals with a family history, potentially improving survival rates.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown success in lung cancer screening using LDCT in high-risk populations, but this specific approach focusing on family history is novel.
