Screening for factors that make divers susceptible to pulmonary edema
Screening for Individual Susceptibility Factors to Immersion Pulmonary Edema
NA · Direction Centrale du Service de Santé des Armées · NCT05049889
This study is trying to find out what makes some divers more likely to get Immersion Pulmonary Edema so that we can improve safety for both military and civilian divers.

What this trial studies
This study aims to identify individual susceptibility factors for Immersion Pulmonary Edema (IPE), a condition that has become increasingly common among military divers. It involves military and civilian divers with a history of at least 100 dives, who will undergo various interventions including terrestrial and swimming exercises, cardiac and pulmonary ultrasounds, and blood collection. The goal is to understand the environmental and personal factors contributing to IPE, which can lead to severe health risks if not addressed early. By identifying these factors, the study hopes to improve safety protocols for divers.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are military or civilian divers aged 18 to 60 who are in good physical condition and have completed at least 100 dives.
Not a fit: Patients who are currently medically unfit to dive or have contraindications to physical exercise or scuba diving will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance the safety and health outcomes for divers by identifying risk factors for pulmonary edema.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of this study is novel, the increasing recognition of IPE suggests that understanding its risk factors could align with broader trends in diving safety research.
