What this trial studies

This is a two-group randomized controlled trial enrolling college nursing students at Tzu Chi University in Hualien, Taiwan. The interventional group receives a 5-week scenario-based simulation program using virtual technology and a virtual coach in addition to regular dementia care lectures, while the control group receives 5 weeks of traditional dementia case discussions plus the same lectures. Outcomes measured include dementia knowledge, empathy, communication, and assessment skills, collected at baseline, week 12, and week 18. The trial compares changes between groups to see if the virtual simulation yields greater improvements.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: College nursing students aged 18 to 40 who are Taiwanese nationals and provide informed consent are the intended participants.

Not a fit: Individuals who are not college nursing students, those outside Taiwan, or nursing students outside the 18–40 age range are unlikely to receive direct benefit from this education-focused program.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this teaching approach could produce better-trained nurses who communicate more empathetically and assess people with dementia more accurately, potentially improving patient care and safety.

How similar studies have performed: Previous research shows simulation-based education can improve dementia knowledge and communication skills, and applying virtual technology is an emerging approach with promising but still limited evidence.
