SALSA assistive technology for independence and safety in shared apartments
Impact Assessment of SALSA (Sensing and Automation for Freedom, Security, Autonomy) Technological Solutions
This project will try smart-home sensors, smart lighting, and wearable monitors to see if they help adults with mental, social, or motor disabilities living in shared flats be more independent and safe.

What this trial studies
This observational project installs SALSA technologies—smart lighting, environmental sensors, and wearable monitoring devices—in apartments occupied by adults with mental, social, and/or motor disabilities in Milan. A cohort of 55 residents will be followed and data on daily functioning, autonomy, safety events, and caregiver workload will be collected from sensors, wearables, caregiver logs, and periodic assessments. No experimental medical treatments are applied; the focus is on how these technologies operate in real shared-living environments and their practical effects. The project is run by Fondazione Don Carlo Gnocchi ONLUS in collaboration with Cascina Biblioteca Società Cooperativa Sociale and Informatici Senza Frontiere APS.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal participants are adults (18+) with mental, social, and/or motor disabilities who live in Cascina Biblioteca’s shared flats and can provide informed consent.
Not a fit: People under 18, those who do not live in the participating shared apartments, or individuals who decline monitoring or cannot provide consent are unlikely to benefit from this project.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the technologies could increase residents' day-to-day independence and safety while reducing the workload for professional caregivers.
How similar studies have performed: Prior research on smart-home sensors and wearable monitoring has shown promising but mixed improvements in independence and safety, with limited evidence specifically from shared residential settings.
