What this trial studies
North Carolina State University and partners will work with the Ripe for Revival mobile market to provide monthly $20 vouchers to eligible adults in eight rural counties and compare nutrition and food-security outcomes. Participants are recruited through NC Cooperative Extension programs and must be willing to shop at the mobile market; data collection will include measures of fruit and vegetable intake, food security, and related diet quality indicators. The intervention leverages an existing non-profit mobile market model that sells discounted produce and sources from local farmers to improve affordability and access. The project runs with community implementation across Bertie, Halifax, Hertford, Jones, Lenoir, Northampton, Warren, and Washington counties and will track changes over the intervention period.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults aged 18 or older who speak English or Spanish, are active participants in an NC Cooperative Extension program, are at risk of food insecurity, are willing to use a $20 monthly voucher at the Ripe for Revival mobile market, and live or work in one of the participating North Carolina counties are eligible.
Not a fit: People who are not at risk of food insecurity, who do not live or work in the listed counties, who are unwilling to shop at the mobile market, or who are not enrolled in NC Cooperative Extension are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the vouchers could make healthy food more affordable and lead to increased produce intake and improved diet-related health for rural residents.
How similar studies have performed: Previous voucher and mobile market programs have shown modest increases in produce purchases and intake among low-income populations, though long-term health impacts have been variable.
