What this trial studies
This study aims to investigate how different resistance training programs impact blood sugar levels in young athletes diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). It focuses on the importance of strength and conditioning (S&C) programs, which have become prevalent in secondary school athletics, and their potential benefits for managing T1DM. Participants will engage in tailored resistance training to assess improvements in glycemic control and overall athletic performance. The study seeks to fill the gap in exercise prescription guidelines specifically for adolescent athletes with T1DM.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adolescents aged 13 and older who have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes for at least two years and are actively using continuous glucose monitoring.
Not a fit: Patients with physical limitations that prevent them from completing the study procedures or those who do not speak English may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide tailored exercise guidelines that improve blood sugar control and athletic performance for young athletes with type 1 diabetes.
How similar studies have performed: While exercise has been shown to improve glycemic control in diabetes, this specific approach to resistance training in adolescent athletes with T1DM is novel and has not been extensively tested.
