Research on the genetics of Parkinson's disease in families

The Parkinson's Genetic Research Study (PaGeR)

Observational University of Washington · NCT01558479

What this trial studies

The Parkinson's Genetic Research Study (PaGeR) aims to identify genes that may increase the risk of developing Parkinson's disease by focusing on families with multiple affected members. Participants will complete a questionnaire, undergo interviews, neurological exams, memory tests, and provide blood samples. This observational study is a collaborative effort among neurologists and researchers across the United States, coordinated by the University of Washington and the VA Puget Sound Health Care System. The study is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and aims to uncover genetic factors contributing to Parkinson's disease.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults over 18 who are part of families with two or more living individuals diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

Not a fit: Patients under 18 years of age will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this research could lead to better understanding and potential prevention strategies for Parkinson's disease.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies focusing on genetic factors in familial Parkinson's disease have shown promise, suggesting that this approach could yield valuable insights.
