Research on Mansonellosis and Schistosomiasis using a network approach
Filling Key Research Gaps With Clinical Implications in Mansonellosis and Schistosomiasis: a Network Approach
This study is testing if a certain bacteria found in a type of worm affects people with Mansonellosis and if there are mixed types of Schistosoma in patients with schistosomiasis to better understand these infections.

What this trial studies
This experimental study aims to investigate the presence of the endosymbiont Wolbachia in microfilariae from individuals infected with Mansonella perstans, as well as the presence of hybrid Schistosoma species in patients with active schistosomiasis. It involves multicenter collaboration and focuses on analyzing biological samples collected from patients prior to any treatment. The study seeks to fill key research gaps in understanding these infections and their implications for public health.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals infected with Mansonella perstans or Schistosoma species who have provided consent for their biological samples to be used for research.
Not a fit: Patients who have already received treatment with praziquantel or other specified drugs prior to sample collection may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this research could lead to improved diagnostic and treatment strategies for patients suffering from Mansonellosis and Schistosomiasis.
How similar studies have performed: While this study addresses important research gaps, the specific network approach and focus on these infections may be novel and not extensively tested in prior studies.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: * samples from patients who gave consent to the storage and use for research purposes of their samples. In the case a network centre necessitates a template for the storage and use for research purposes of their samples; * samples collected before any treatment with praziquantel and/or benzimidazole and/or avermectin and/or diethylcarbamazine and/or doxycycline drug; * samples collected and stored in conditions suitable for this study (Annex 2); * known country of birth of the patient or of most likely infection (if different from the country of birth) Exclusion criteria: - no compliance with at least one of the above-mentioned inclusion criteria.
