Relationship between past TB type, lung function, and walking capacity in teens with post‑TB lung disease

Correlation Between Types of Tuberculosis, Spirometry Result, and Functional Capacity Based on the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) in Adolescents With Post-Tuberculosis Lung Disease.

Universitas Padjadjaran · NCT07451899

We will test whether the type of past tuberculosis and current spirometry results are linked to how far adolescents with post‑TB lung disease can walk in six minutes.

What this trial studies

This is a cross‑sectional observational study enrolling adolescents aged 10–18 years with post‑tuberculosis lung disease at Hasan Sadikin General Hospital in Bandung, Indonesia. Participants will complete spirometry according to ATS/ERS guidelines and perform a 6‑Minute Walk Test (6MWT) to measure functional capacity. Investigators will record TB type and compare spirometric patterns with 6MWT distance to analyze correlations. The study excludes individuals with other lung diseases or physical limitations that prevent safe completion of the 6MWT.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adolescents aged 10–18 years diagnosed with post‑tuberculosis lung disease by a pediatrician who can safely perform the 6‑Minute Walk Test are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Patients with other non‑TB lung diseases, those unable to complete the 6MWT due to physical limitations, or people outside the 10–18 age range are unlikely to benefit from this study's findings.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If clear links are found, clinicians could use TB history and spirometry to spot adolescents who need earlier rehabilitation or closer follow-up to reduce activity limitations.

How similar studies have performed: Previous observational studies have documented reduced lung function and exercise capacity after TB, but direct correlations between TB type, spirometry, and 6MWT in adolescents are limited.
