Reducing sedentary behavior to improve recovery after stroke
The Whole Day Matters After Stroke: Moving Towards Precision Rehabilitation Guided by Behavioural and Imaging Markers
NA · University of Alberta · NCT05753761

What this trial studies
This research program aims to understand how reducing sedentary behavior shortly after a stroke can enhance functional mobility and overall recovery. It will involve 50 participants who are within one week of experiencing an ischemic stroke and are able to walk at least 5 meters. The study will assess the impact of neuroimaging biomarkers, such as leukoaraiosis, on rehabilitation outcomes and explore the use of accelerometry to evaluate functional disability. Participants will undergo a behavior change intervention designed to promote increased activity levels.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 and older who are within 7 days of an ischemic stroke and can walk at least 5 meters.
Not a fit: Patients with other neurological conditions, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or unstable cardiovascular conditions may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to improved recovery outcomes for stroke patients by optimizing rehabilitation strategies.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of this study is novel, previous studies have indicated that reducing sedentary behavior can positively impact recovery in stroke patients.
