What this trial studies
This research focuses on the high consumption of Benzodiazepines and related drugs among elderly patients, which often leads to adverse effects such as falls and addiction. It aims to quantify the number of patients who, after a dosage reduction during hospitalization in a Geriatric Care and Rehabilitation department, experience an increase in their medication within 12 weeks post-discharge. The study will analyze data from patients aged 75 and older who had their Benzodiazepine dosage reduced while hospitalized. The goal is to improve the benefit/risk balance of these medications in elderly care.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are elderly patients aged 75 and older who have had their Benzodiazepine dosage reduced during hospitalization.
Not a fit: Patients currently using Benzodiazepines to prevent epileptic seizures may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to safer medication practices for elderly patients, reducing the risks associated with long-term Benzodiazepine use.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have highlighted the risks of long-term Benzodiazepine use in the elderly, suggesting that this approach to dosage reduction is both relevant and necessary.
