Radiotherapy after surgery for malignant pleural mesothelioma
Hemithoracic Volumetric Modulated Arc Radiotherapy as Part of Lung-Sparing Multimodality Therapy in Patients With Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma Phase II Trial
This study is testing a new type of radiation treatment after surgery for people with malignant pleural mesothelioma to see if it helps them do better while causing fewer side effects.

What this trial studies
This study evaluates the safety and efficacy of hemithoracic volumetric arc radiotherapy in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma following pleural decortication surgery. Patients will first receive neoadjuvant chemotherapy, followed by surgery, and then post-operative radiotherapy to reduce the risk of local failure. The goal is to improve treatment outcomes while minimizing toxicities associated with radiation. The study aims to provide insights into the effectiveness of this combined treatment approach.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma who have undergone pleural decortication and are able to provide informed consent.
Not a fit: Patients with poor pulmonary function, recurrent disease, or those unable to complete the full course of radiotherapy may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could improve local control of malignant pleural mesothelioma and enhance patient survival rates.
How similar studies have performed: While this specific approach is being evaluated, similar studies have shown promise in using radiotherapy post-surgery for other cancers, indicating potential for success.
