Quality of life after open repair for complex abdominal aortic aneurysms
Patient-Reported Quality of Life After Open Surgery for Complex Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms: A Prospective Study
This project will use the SF-36 questionnaire to see how open surgical repair affects quality of life over one year in adults having open surgery for complex abdominal aortic aneurysms.

What this trial studies
This is a prospective observational study enrolling adults undergoing open surgical repair for complex abdominal aortic aneurysms at two Swiss centers. Health-related quality of life will be measured with the SF-36 at baseline, discharge, 1 month, 6 months, and 12 months after surgery. The study will analyze changes over time and differences by subgroups such as age, comorbidities, and aneurysm type. Results are intended to fill a gap in patient-reported outcomes for open repair and support shared decision-making in vascular care.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults over 18 undergoing open surgical repair for non-ruptured juxtarenal, pararenal, or suprarenal complex abdominal aortic aneurysms who can complete the SF-36 questionnaire are eligible.
Not a fit: Patients with ruptured aneurysms, those treated with endovascular techniques, or individuals with cognitive impairment preventing reliable questionnaire completion are not represented and may not benefit directly from the findings.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the results could clarify expected recovery and long-term quality of life after open repair and help patients and surgeons choose the best treatment approach.
How similar studies have performed: While patient-reported outcomes have been reported for routine AAA repair and endovascular approaches, prospective QoL data specific to open repair for complex AAAs are limited, so this addresses a relatively under-studied area.
Eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Patients over 18 years old * Patients undergoing open surgical repair for complex abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs), including juxtarenal, pararenal and suprarenal/paravisceral aneurysms * Patients treated for asymptomatic or symptomatic non ruptured aneurysms * Patients who are able and willing to provide informed, complete, and accurate responses to the SF-36 questionnaire Exclusion Criteria: * Patients under 18 years old * Patients treated for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms * Patients with incomplete data, or who denied consent * Patients with cognitive impairment or other conditions that prevent them from reliably completing the SF-36 questionnaires.
