What this trial studies

Researchers will run a prospective cohort of older adults discharged from Ain Shams University Geriatric Hospital, collecting baseline information from medical records for admissions between July 2024 and June 2025. Baseline data will include demographics, complete drug history and medication adherence (Hill-Bone scale), prior falls, cognitive, psychological, nutritional and functional assessments, and laboratory results. Participants who meet inclusion criteria (age ≥60, not bedridden, no active malignancy) will be followed by telephone one year after discharge to record incident falls and fractures. The primary outcome is occurrence of falls after discharge and a secondary outcome is incident fractures related to those falls.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 60 years or older who were admitted to and discharged from Ain Shams University Geriatric Hospital, are willing to participate, and are not bedridden or living with active malignancy are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Patients who are bedridden, have active cancer, cannot be contacted by phone for follow-up, or decline participation are unlikely to benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help clinicians reduce fall and fracture risk by changing how psychotropic medications are prescribed and monitored in older adults after hospital discharge.

How similar studies have performed: Previous observational studies have consistently linked psychotropic drug use to higher fall risk in older adults, although trials that changed prescribing to prevent falls have produced mixed results.
