What this trial studies

The programme delivers a structured psychosocial intervention via videoconference consisting of ten weekly 1.5-hour group sessions for 6–7 participants, followed by two follow-up sessions at three-month intervals. Outcomes include quality of life, self-esteem, self-concept, anxious-depressive symptoms, interpersonal needs, and coping strategies measured before and after the intervention and at follow-up. Participants must be 18–75 years old, diagnosed with spina bifida, Spanish-speaking, able to consent, and have computer and internet access. The intervention is developed and run by the University of Deusto in Bilbao and focuses on strengthening social skills and psychological resources through group teleassistance.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18–75 with a specialist diagnosis of spina bifida who speak Spanish, can provide informed consent, and have a computer with camera/microphone and internet access for videoconference sessions.

Not a fit: Patients with comorbid diagnoses or sensory deficits that prevent meaningful participation in group videoconference activities, non-Spanish speakers, or those without required technology are unlikely to benefit from this programme.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the programme could raise self-esteem and social skills, reduce anxiety or depressive symptoms, and improve overall quality of life for participating adults with spina bifida.

How similar studies have performed: Telehealth psychosocial interventions have shown promise in chronic neurological and disability populations, but structured teleassistance specifically targeted to adults with spina bifida remains relatively novel and less well studied.
