What this trial studies

This observational study will enroll at least 500 children aged 3 to 6 who attend preschool and will be examined by qualified diagnosticians. Children will complete standardized tasks probing cognitive functioning, language skills, and social-emotional behavior, while parents provide information on perinatal history and their child's socioemotional functioning. The study will compare patterns of cognitive, linguistic, and social-emotional variables between children with indicated developmental delays and peers, and will examine whether age or gender modify those relationships. No treatments are given; the aim is to map correlates that could guide earlier identification and referral for intervention.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are children aged 3–6 who attend preschool, can participate in standardized psychological assessment, and whose parent or guardian can provide written informed consent.

Not a fit: Children with severe acute medical conditions, severe uncorrected sensory impairments, or those outside the 3–6 age range are unlikely to benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help clinicians and educators identify children at higher risk for developmental delays earlier and better target early supports.

How similar studies have performed: Previous observational studies have reported associations between perinatal factors, language/cognitive measures, and socioemotional functioning and developmental delays, but findings are variable and do not prove causation.
