What this trial studies
This cluster-randomized controlled trial investigates the impact of a multilevel intervention called Healthy Drinks, Healthy Futures, aimed at increasing water consumption and reducing sugar-sweetened beverage intake among preschool-age children in childcare centers. The study targets low-income Latino families, addressing the high prevalence of obesity in this demographic. By engaging childcare providers and parents, the intervention seeks to create supportive environments that encourage healthier beverage choices. The trial will assess changes in beverage consumption and obesity rates among participating children.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are preschool-age children and their families who are willing to participate and do not have health conditions that prevent water intake.
Not a fit: Children who are not of preschool age or families who do not speak English or Spanish may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity by promoting healthier beverage choices in early childhood.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in promoting water consumption over sugar-sweetened beverages in schoolchildren, but this approach in childcare settings is novel.
