What this trial studies
This research project aims to enhance the attendance of genetic counseling among African American women who are at high risk for breast cancer. Utilizing a randomized control trial design, participants will be assigned to either receive a culturally targeted decision aid video or a standard informational brochure about genetic counseling. The study will assess the effectiveness of these interventions in promoting genetic counseling attendance and will also explore the influence of these interventions on participants' social and familial networks. The study involves a cancer genetic risk assessment as part of the intake process to identify eligible participants.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are African American women aged 25 or older who are classified as high risk for breast cancer and have not previously received genetic counseling.
Not a fit: Patients who do not identify as African American, are under 25 years old, or have previously received genetic counseling may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could significantly increase the uptake of genetic counseling among high-risk African American women, potentially leading to earlier detection and better management of breast cancer.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in using culturally targeted interventions to improve health outcomes in minority populations, suggesting that this approach may be effective.
