What this trial studies

Project SOAR Awakenings is a randomized, controlled intervention comparing an online psychoeducational/psychosocial program to a mailed-materials comparison condition for Black American women with breast cancer. Eligible participants complete an electronic baseline questionnaire and standardized measures of depressive symptoms, fatigue, and well-being, as well as potential mediators like self-compassion and coping styles. Recruitment is conducted through Carrie's TOUCH and affiliated AME church networks, and the intervention is delivered online (Zoom) while the comparison group receives mailed materials to use on their own. Outcomes for the two groups will be compared to see if the online Awakenings program leads to greater improvements in mood, fatigue, and overall well-being.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Black (African) American adults who identify as women, age 18 or older, living in the United States, who read English and have internet/Zoom access are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Men with breast cancer, non-English speakers, non‑U.S. residents, and people without internet access are not eligible and therefore would not benefit from participating.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could reduce depressive symptoms and fatigue and improve emotional well‑being for Black American women with breast cancer.

How similar studies have performed: Psychoeducational and psychosocial online programs for cancer patients have shown modest improvements in mood and fatigue in broader cancer populations, but culturally tailored interventions specifically for Black American women are less well studied.
