What this trial studies
The Puerto Rico Asthma Integrated Response Program (PR-AIR) aims to reduce asthma disparities among children in high-burden communities of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The study is divided into two phases: the first phase involves collaborating with community stakeholders to identify barriers and facilitators for implementing the program, while the second phase evaluates the effectiveness of both low-intensity (virtual) and high-intensity (in-person) intervention methods. The program will engage 480 children aged 2-12 with poorly controlled asthma, assessing outcomes related to asthma control and quality of life, as well as community-specific metrics like emergency department visits and school absences.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are children aged 2-12 years living in high asthma burden areas of San Juan with poorly controlled asthma.
Not a fit: Patients with complex medical conditions may not benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly improve asthma management and health outcomes for children in underserved communities.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success with community-based interventions for asthma management, indicating potential for this approach.
