What this trial studies
This study evaluates the effectiveness of the YES-IDEAS program, which adapts the Youth Empowerment Solutions curriculum to empower middle school students from diverse backgrounds to combat racism and reduce youth violence. Participants will engage in community improvement projects designed to enhance their sense of empowerment and promote anti-racist behaviors. The study employs a group-randomized trial design across multiple after-school programs in southeast Michigan, focusing on measuring changes in attitudes towards racism and violent behavior among participants. By integrating youth engagement with violence prevention strategies, the study aims to address the critical public health issue of youth violence.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are middle school students in grades 6 through 8 enrolled in after-school programs in southeast Michigan.
Not a fit: Students who do not assent to participate or whose parents refuse consent will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly reduce youth violence and promote healthier community interactions among diverse populations.
How similar studies have performed: While similar approaches to youth empowerment and violence prevention have been explored, this specific integration of anti-racism with violence prevention is relatively novel.
