What this trial studies
This program aims to increase screening rates and reduce late-stage breast cancer diagnoses among homeless women by bringing mobile mammography clinics to shelters. Over two years, clinic staff will conduct surveys to identify barriers to breast health and provide culturally appropriate educational sessions led by experienced public health educators. Women who wish to receive a mammogram will have the opportunity to do so at no cost, creating a supportive and community-oriented environment. The initiative also includes activities and meals to foster a sense of community among participants.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are women under 40 who are homeless, have not had a mammogram in the last 12 months, and present with high-risk breast cancer symptoms or have a first-degree relative with breast cancer.
Not a fit: Patients who are homeless but do not present with high-risk breast cancer symptoms or have a first-degree relative with breast cancer may not benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly improve breast cancer screening rates and early detection among a high-risk population.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in similar outreach programs aimed at increasing cancer screening rates among underserved populations.
