What this trial studies
This project investigates the effects of the probiotic Bifidobacterium lactis subsp. infantis B8762 on respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses in preschool children under 7 years old in Malaysia. The study aims to determine whether probiotics can effectively prevent these common infections, which currently lack effective treatments. The methodology includes administering the probiotic and a placebo to assess their impact on illness incidence and severity. The research is grounded in existing evidence that probiotics may enhance immune function and compete with pathogens.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are preschool children under 7 years old who exhibit symptoms of respiratory and/or gastrointestinal diseases.
Not a fit: Patients on long-term medication for severe illnesses or those with G6PD deficiency may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide a safe and effective method for reducing respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses in children.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown promising results for probiotics in preventing respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, suggesting a potential for success in this approach.
