Preventing under-fueling in collegiate athletes with improved nutrition
Prevention and Education for RED-S Through Fueling Outcomes and Research in Metabolic Health

What this trial studies
This open-label pilot implements standard low-risk nutrition screening (height, weight, grip strength, questionnaires, and body composition) and provides sports-dietitian guidance adapted from Division I protocols. Data will be collected at three timepoints—pre-season, mid-season, and post-season—to monitor energy availability, body composition, and performance-related metrics. A subset of athletes may volunteer for additional testing such as VO2, resting metabolic rate, and activity monitoring. The project also examines the financial feasibility of scaling the program across the university.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal participants are NCAA-eligible Division III athletes at CWRU aged 18 or older who can give consent and are willing to undergo anthropometric measurements, questionnaires, and body composition testing.
Not a fit: Athletes under 18, pregnant or nursing athletes, those with a diagnosed eating disorder, or athletes unwilling to provide the required measurements are excluded and may not receive benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could reduce under-fueling, improve athletes' health and performance, and enable earlier identification of low energy availability.
How similar studies have performed: This study builds on a prior CWRU pilot that reported improved athlete health and performance with nutrition support and adapts established Division I screening methods for Division III settings.
