What this trial studies
This project combines epidemiologic analysis with a community-targeted prevention program to identify and address causes of higher gastric cancer rates among Indigenous peoples in Taiwan. Investigators will collect local health data, screen for and treat Helicobacter pylori infections where appropriate, and deliver culturally tailored outreach to modify lifestyle and environmental risks. The program is coordinated by National Taiwan University Hospital in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Welfare and will track participation, changes in risk factors, and longer-term cancer outcomes. Practical barriers such as limited access to care and cultural differences will be assessed and addressed to improve feasibility and scalability.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults aged 20–60 who identify as Indigenous, are mentally competent to consent, and can communicate with study staff are eligible.
Not a fit: People outside the age range, pregnant individuals, those with major comorbid diseases, or those with advanced gastric cancer are unlikely to get benefit from this prevention program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could lower stomach cancer rates and deaths among Indigenous peoples and reduce the health gap with non-Indigenous populations.
How similar studies have performed: Past population programs that screen for and eradicate H. pylori and promote lifestyle changes have reduced gastric cancer risk in some East Asian settings, but targeted prevention for Indigenous communities remains relatively untested.
