Preventing root caries in older adults using fluoride varnish with added bioactive glass
Root Caries Prevention Using Fluoride Varnish Fortified With Strontium-doped Bioactive Glass Ceramic: a Randomized Double-blind Controlled Clinical Trial
This study is testing if adding a special glass to fluoride varnish can help older adults prevent root cavities better than just using fluoride alone.

What this trial studies
This clinical trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of 5% sodium fluoride varnish, both with and without Strontium-doped bioactive glass (SBGC), in preventing root caries among community-dwelling older adults over a 36-month period. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either the fluoride varnish with SBGC or the standard fluoride varnish quarterly. The study seeks to determine if the addition of SBGC enhances the protective effects of fluoride against root caries development. The trial is designed as a double-blind, randomized controlled trial to ensure unbiased results.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are community-dwelling adults aged 60 years and older who have a good collaborative relationship with healthcare providers.
Not a fit: Patients with fewer than 8 natural teeth, severe medical conditions, or those using high fluoride toothpaste may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved preventive strategies for root caries in older adults, potentially reducing dental decay and associated complications.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown promising results with fluoride varnish in caries prevention, but the specific combination with SBGC is a novel approach.
