Preventing frailty in people living with HIV aged 65–74

A Pilot Project for PLWH Aged 65-75: Preventing the Development of Frailty

Observational Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Saint Pierre · NCT07486661

This project will see if using the Fried frailty screen and offering a linked care pathway can identify and help prevent frailty in people living with HIV aged 65–74.

What this trial studies

This observational pilot in Brussels will screen people living with HIV aged 65–74 using the Fried frailty phenotype to determine how many meet criteria for frailty or pre-frailty. Researchers will characterize clinical and social features of participants who screen positive and compare Fried scale results with local clinical judgment to explore validity in this population. The project will also offer a model care pathway for those identified at risk, linking geriatric assessment and management services that are not routinely reimbursed for this age group. No experimental treatments are given; data collection will occur at CHU Saint-Pierre and the centre MIA and results will inform larger preventive programs.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: People living with HIV aged 65–74 who can attend visits at CHU Saint-Pierre or centre MIA in Brussels and can provide informed consent are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: People younger than 65 or older than 74, those without HIV, those already severely frail beyond preventive interventions, or those unable to attend the Brussels sites are unlikely to benefit.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the project could enable earlier identification and a practical care pathway to prevent or delay frailty, reducing hospitalizations and preserving independence for older people living with HIV.

How similar studies have performed: The Fried frailty phenotype is widely used and has been applied in older and some HIV-positive cohorts, but targeted validation and prevention pathway work specifically for PLWH aged 65–74 is limited.
