What this trial studies

This clinical trial aims to reduce iatrogenic dependence linked to hospitalization (DILH) in elderly patients aged 75 and over by implementing the TAKE CARE intervention. The intervention focuses on educating healthcare staff about best practices to address the six main causes of DILH, including immobilization, falls, undernutrition, urinary incontinence, confusion, and drug side effects. The study will be conducted as a multicenter, randomized, cluster trial across 11 acute geriatric units, comparing the effectiveness of the TAKE CARE intervention against usual care. The goal is to promote better patient outcomes and maintain functionality during hospital stays.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are elderly patients aged 75 and older who are hospitalized for acute conditions without prior post-operative or post-resuscitation care.

Not a fit: Patients who are completely dependent on assistance for daily activities prior to hospitalization or those who have been in another facility for more than 72 hours before admission may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly reduce the incidence of DILH, improving the quality of life and independence of elderly patients post-hospitalization.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have indicated that targeted interventions can effectively reduce hospital-related complications in elderly patients, suggesting a promising potential for this approach.
