Prevalence and risk factors for high blood potassium in adults in Brazil
Investigating the Impact of Serum Potassium Levels on Prevalence and Risk Factors Associated With Management Strategies for Patients With Hyperkalaemia in Brazilian Clinical Settings: An Observational Study.
See how common high potassium (hyperkalaemia) is and which risk factors are linked to it among adults with heart failure, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure who attended participating clinics in Brazil.

What this trial studies
This is a retrospective, descriptive analysis of anonymised point-of-care potassium results collected during the First National Campaign for the Diagnosis of Hyperkalaemia. The dataset comes from Hi Technologies Ltda. and includes adults aged 18 or older who visited private cardiology, nephrology, or dialysis clinics between April and November 2025. Researchers will estimate the prevalence of hyperkalaemia and describe demographic and clinical characteristics, associated risk factors, and treatment patterns. The population includes patients with heart failure, chronic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, and/or systemic arterial hypertension.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults 18 years or older with a history of heart failure, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and/or systemic arterial hypertension who attended participating cardiology, nephrology, or dialysis clinics during the campaign period.
Not a fit: Patients with advanced malignancy in palliative care, other advanced disease with life expectancy under one year, or those lacking information on hyperkalaemia risk factors are unlikely to benefit from the study findings.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the results could improve awareness of how common hyperkalaemia is in high-risk Brazilian patients and help target screening and management efforts.
How similar studies have performed: Epidemiologic studies have previously documented elevated potassium prevalence in CKD and heart failure populations, but using point-of-care national campaign data from Brazil represents a relatively novel data source.
