PREVAIL Interdisciplinary Pain Care Program for Veterans
PREVAIL: Efficacy of a Veterans Healthcare Administration (VHA) Whole Health Interdisciplinary Pain Clinic
This project will try a coordinated five-specialist pain care team (interventional pain, psychology, pharmacy, nutrition, physical therapy) for Veterans with chronic pain to see if it reduces pain and improves daily function over six months compared with waiting list care.

What this trial studies
This pragmatic randomized program compares immediate participation in a multi-disciplinary pain care team to a six-month waitlist among Veterans receiving care at the Salem VA. Participants meet with the interdisciplinary team to create a personalized pain plan, receive monthly coaching calls, and complete surveys with a six-month follow-up visit. Outcomes include patient-reported pain intensity and how much pain interferes with daily life. The intervention is delivered within routine VA care to test real-world effectiveness.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are Veterans receiving care at the Salem VA Health Care System who have chronic pain lasting more than three months and are enrolled in the PREVAIL Interdisciplinary Team Track.
Not a fit: Patients with diagnosed mild or major neurocognitive disorder, a current acute physical injury that temporarily raises pain, or those planning pain-related surgery during the study period may not receive benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could reduce pain and improve daily functioning by offering coordinated, multi-specialist care tailored to each Veteran.
How similar studies have performed: Interdisciplinary pain programs have shown benefits in prior research, but this specific five-specialist, VA-focused PREVAIL approach is being tested in a pragmatic randomized design within routine VA care.
