NA · Hospital for Special Surgery, New York · NCT05520593

What this trial studies
This study investigates whether consuming a complex carbohydrate drink before surgery can reduce the length of hospital stay and improve same-day discharge rates for patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty. It aims to address the challenges of postoperative nausea, vomiting, and dizziness by optimizing preoperative hydration. The study focuses on patients scheduled for ambulatory total knee and hip arthroplasties, assessing the impact of hydration on their recovery outcomes.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include those scheduled for ambulatory total knee or hip arthroplasties who agree to same-day discharge.
Not a fit: Patients with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or chronic kidney disease, or those with a BMI outside the specified range may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to shorter hospital stays and improved recovery experiences for patients undergoing joint surgeries.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of using a carbohydrate drink preoperatively is novel, similar studies on hydration and recovery have shown promising results.
