Preoperative clear carbohydrate drink to improve recovery after elective cesarean under neuraxial anesthesia.
Evaluation of the Effect of Preoperatively Administered Oral Clear Carbohydrate-Rich Drink on ObsQoR-10 Recovery Scores of Patients Undergoing Elective Cesarean Section With Neuraxial Anesthesia: A Prospective, Randomized, Controlled, Double-Blind Study
This will test whether drinking 400 ml of a clear carbohydrate drink two hours before an elective cesarean under neuraxial anesthesia helps women recover better and feel less hungry, thirsty, or anxious.

What this trial studies
This is a prospective, randomized, double-blind trial enrolling 100 pregnant women scheduled for elective cesarean at Atatürk University Research Hospital. Participants are randomized 1:1 to receive either 400 ml of a carbohydrate-rich clear drink or 400 ml distilled water two hours before surgery, with standardized neuraxial anesthesia and postoperative analgesia. The primary outcome is the ObsQoR-10 score at 24 and 48 hours after surgery, and secondary outcomes include patient-reported hunger, thirst, and anxiety. Randomization is computer-generated and allocation is concealed to investigators and patients to minimize bias.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Term pregnant women (≥37 weeks) aged 18 or older who are scheduled for elective cesarean under neuraxial anesthesia and who do not have diabetes, significant gastrointestinal disease, obesity, or contraindications to neuraxial anesthesia are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Women with diabetes, obesity, GERD, hiatal hernia, intestinal obstruction, preeclampsia/eclampsia, emergency cesarean, fetal anomalies, or contraindications to neuraxial anesthesia are excluded and unlikely to benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, a simple preoperative carbohydrate drink could improve early postpartum recovery and reduce hunger, thirst, and anxiety after elective cesarean.
How similar studies have performed: Preoperative carbohydrate drinks have shown modest benefits for comfort and metabolic markers in other surgical populations, but evidence specific to elective cesarean and ObsQoR-10 outcomes is limited.
