Preoperative carbohydrate loading to improve recovery after bladder surgery

Impact of the Preoperative Carbohydrate Loading for Enhancing Recovery After Radical Cystectomy: a Randomized Controlled Trial.

NA · Fundación Pública Andaluza para la gestión de la Investigación en Sevilla · NCT05913245

What this trial studies

This clinical trial investigates the effects of preoperative carbohydrate loading with maltodextrin beverages compared to strict fasting and water intake on recovery after radical cystectomy. The study aims to determine if carbohydrate loading can reduce the time it takes for intestinal function to return post-surgery, potentially improving patient outcomes. By challenging traditional fasting practices, the trial aligns with Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) guidelines, which emphasize minimizing complications like paralytic ileus. Participants will be monitored for their recovery progress following the intervention.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults over 18 years old who are scheduled for elective radical cystectomy.

Not a fit: Patients with severe comorbidities such as renal or liver failure, or those with gastrointestinal issues may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to faster recovery times and improved postoperative outcomes for patients undergoing radical cystectomy.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promising results with similar preoperative carbohydrate loading approaches, suggesting potential for success in this trial.
