What this trial studies

This pilot trial investigates the feasibility of a prehabilitation program for older adults aged 60 and above who are scheduled for Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation due to Multiple Myeloma. Participants will be randomly assigned to either an 8-week home-based exercise program delivered via telehealth or an attention control group receiving nutrition counseling. The study aims to assess the feasibility and acceptability of the prehabilitation program, as well as its impact on physical function at the time of transplant and 12 weeks post-transplant. Assessments will be conducted at baseline, during the transplant, and at follow-up to evaluate outcomes.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are older adults aged 60 and above diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and scheduled for Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation at UAB.

Not a fit: Patients at high risk for impending pathologic fracture may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this program could enhance physical function and overall recovery for older adults undergoing stem cell transplantation.

How similar studies have performed: While similar prehabilitation approaches have shown promise in other populations, this specific application in older adults undergoing stem cell transplantation is relatively novel.
