What this trial studies

This mixed-methods, randomized pilot will recruit about 48 physician trainees and randomize them to a coaching intervention or control arm. Intervention participants receive monthly one-on-one sessions with a novice physician coach of their choice plus a certified physician coach–led video group of about six peers; all coaching is delivered largely via videoconference. Participants in both arms complete brief electronic surveys at baseline, 4 months, and 7 months measuring burnout, professional fulfillment, imposter phenomenon, self-efficacy, resilience, and quality of life. The program is designed to increase accessibility by using trained physician novice coaches plus web-based group coaching rather than resource-intensive in-person formats.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are MD or DO resident or fellow trainees who are pregnant or within three months postpartum, age 18 or older, English-fluent, and able to complete electronic surveys and video calls.

Not a fit: Those unable to participate in virtual sessions or electronic surveys, or who require more intensive mental health or medical care than coaching provides, are unlikely to benefit from this program.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could reduce burnout and improve self-efficacy, resilience, and quality of life for pregnant physician trainees.

How similar studies have performed: Prior professional coaching interventions have shown promise in reducing clinician burnout, but combining novice physician one-on-one coaching with certified web-based group coaching for pregnant trainees is a novel approach.
