Predicting the risk of future fractures in elderly patients with osteoporosis
RIFRA - Re-fracture Risk Prediction in Patients With Fragility Fracture: Score Development and Validation
This study is trying to see if a new scoring system can help predict the risk of future fractures in older patients who have had hip surgery due to osteoporosis.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to validate a predictive score for fragility fractures in elderly patients who have undergone hip fracture surgery. By analyzing a cohort of patients treated at a high-volume orthopedic center in Lombardy, the study seeks to identify risk factors associated with osteoporosis and subsequent fractures. The goal is to enhance the reliability of existing predictive scores, which are crucial for preventing secondary fractures in at-risk populations. The study focuses on patients who had total or partial hip replacements due to compound fractures over a five-year period.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are elderly individuals who have undergone total or partial hip replacement due to a compound fracture of the hip.
Not a fit: Patients undergoing hip replacement for reasons other than compound fractures, such as pathological fractures, may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved prediction and prevention of secondary fractures in elderly patients with osteoporosis.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have explored predictive scores for osteoporosis-related fractures, but this specific validation approach is novel.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * People who underwent total or partial hip replacement (ICD 9 CM 81.51, 81.52) in five years (2013-2017) at the hospital for a compound fracture of the hip (ICD 9 CM 820, 820.01-820.09). Exclusion Criteria: * People undergoing the same intervention for other reasons (e.g. pathological fracture, ICD 9 CM 733.14). ICD 9 CM stands for International Classification of Disease, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification.
