Predicting nerve damage in patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease
Estimate the Risk of Diabetic and Uremic Peripheral Neuropathy Using Physical and Functional Testing

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to assess the risk of peripheral neuropathy in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) stages 3 and 4, as well as those with diabetes. It focuses on identifying the common complication of peripheral neuropathy, which affects a significant portion of these patients. The study will utilize functional testing methods to improve the accuracy of neuropathy screening, addressing the limitations of current diagnostic tests that are often subjective or only detect advanced stages of nerve damage.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include individuals with CKD stage 4-5 or diabetes who can walk 20 meters and have a BMI under 35.
Not a fit: Patients currently on dialysis, with cognitive impairments, or those with significant musculoskeletal or neurological diseases may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved early detection and management of peripheral neuropathy in patients with diabetes and CKD.
How similar studies have performed: While the approach of using functional testing for neuropathy prediction is promising, it has not been extensively tested in similar studies, making this a novel investigation.
