Predicting lymph node spread in thyroid cancer patients

Quantitative Rating Scale Based on Preoperative Prediction of Lymph Node Dissection in Patients With Thyroid Cancer

Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University · NCT06286631

This study is trying to create a new scoring system to help doctors predict if papillary thyroid cancer patients will have lymph node spread based on information from around 1000 patients who had surgery.

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to predict lymph node metastasis in patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) by developing a new scoring scale based on multifactorial data collected from approximately 1000 patients who underwent thyroidectomy between 2021 and 2023. The study will analyze various patient characteristics, including age, gender, tumor size, and preoperative results, using classical machine learning algorithms to identify significant factors related to lymph node involvement. The resulting quantitative scoring system will be clinically validated to assess its effectiveness in predicting lymph node metastasis in new patients.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients aged 16 to 80 diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer.

Not a fit: Patients with other types of tumors, such as medullary carcinoma or undifferentiated carcinoma, will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve preoperative decision-making and reduce recurrence rates in patients with papillary thyroid cancer.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies on lymph node metastasis in thyroid cancer, this approach using machine learning for predictive scoring is relatively novel.
