Practical geriatric assessment for older adults with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer receiving SBRT
Practical Geriatric Assessment in Older Adults With Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Undergoing Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy
NA · Brigham and Women's Hospital · NCT06987890
This project will test whether a brief Practical Geriatric Assessment (PGA) can be used with adults 65+ who have stage I–II non-small cell lung cancer and are receiving stereotactic body radiation therapy to identify care needs and guide supportive referrals.

What this trial studies
This single-center interventional project at Brigham and Women's Hospital implements the PGA—a 10–15-minute, provider-administered geriatric screening tool—for patients aged 65 and older with stage I–II NSCLC who are scheduled for SBRT. Participants complete the PGA prior to treatment so clinicians can identify issues in function, nutrition, cognition, social support, and comorbidity and refer patients to services such as nutrition counseling, physical therapy, or social work as indicated. Because comprehensive geriatric assessments are resource-intensive and underused, the study examines the feasibility and acceptability of embedding the abbreviated PGA into routine pre-SBRT care. There are no exclusion criteria beyond age and diagnosis, and the project gathers information on uptake, time burden, and patient acceptability of the PGA.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 65 and older with radiographically or pathologically confirmed stage I–II NSCLC who are planning to receive SBRT and can complete questionnaires in English or with an interpreter.
Not a fit: Patients who already receive a full geriatrician-led comprehensive geriatric assessment or those unable to engage with questionnaires may derive little additional benefit from the PGA.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the PGA could help clinicians quickly identify older patients' needs and connect them to appropriate supportive services without requiring geriatric specialists.
How similar studies have performed: Comprehensive geriatric assessment has demonstrated benefits in older adults with cancer, and abridged tools like the PGA are recommended by ASCO, SIOG, and CARG, but real-world implementation and patient acceptability of the PGA remain less well proven.
