Effect of Physical Activity Program on Sedentary and Physical Activity Level of Patients With Upper Aerodigestive Tract Cancer

NA · Centre Hospitalier de Valence · NCT06184880

What this trial studies

APAORL2 is a randomized, open-label, controlled single-center trial enrolling 96 adults treated for localized upper aerodigestive tract cancer. Participants are randomized 1:1 to either standard care with physical activity recommendations or standard care plus a structured physical activity program delivered during treatment and the post-treatment phase, with remote sessions available via internet-connected devices. The primary outcome compares sedentary behavior and physical activity levels after the treatment phase, and secondary outcomes include quality of life and fatigue measured over an 18-month follow-up. The intervention is behavioral, aiming for sustained changes in daily activity patterns rather than introducing new medical treatments.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults with newly diagnosed, histologically confirmed, non-metastatic upper aerodigestive tract cancer, a life expectancy of at least 18 months, and access to a smartphone, tablet, or computer for remote sessions.

Not a fit: Patients with contraindications to moderate physical activity or those who cannot be followed or participate remotely for the duration of the 18-month program are unlikely to benefit.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could reduce sitting time, increase daily physical activity, and improve quality of life and fatigue for people treated for head and neck cancer.

How similar studies have performed: Physical activity interventions have shown benefits in other cancer populations, but evidence is more limited specifically for upper aerodigestive tract (head and neck) cancer and for long-term behavioral programs.
