Personalized approach to assess frailty in older adults undergoing colonoscopy
A Personalised Approach Utilising the Frailty Index to Empower Consumers to Make Informed Decisions About Having a Colonoscopy to Avoid Low Value Care. A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial.

What this trial studies
This study focuses on older adults over 65 years who may be at risk for adverse outcomes from colonoscopy due to frailty. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either a personalized approach that includes a frailty assessment and tailored information or the current standard care for surveillance colonoscopy. The aim is to evaluate patient satisfaction and the percentage of colonoscopies that can be avoided by considering frailty in clinical decision-making. By engaging patients and clinicians, the study seeks to enhance informed decision-making and minimize risks associated with colonoscopy.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals aged over 65 who are able to understand study instructions and participate in assessments.
Not a fit: Patients who are unable to consent or participate in the required assessments will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to safer and more effective management of gastrointestinal diseases in frail older adults.
How similar studies have performed: While frailty assessments are gaining attention, this specific personalized approach in the context of colonoscopy surveillance is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
