What this trial studies

The project adapts the existing Relais Allaitement (PRALL) peer-support model and pilots it with trained volunteer mothers at the Hôpital Femme Mère Enfant (HFME) in Bron, France. It uses an observational feasibility design offering one-to-one peer support in the maternity and neonatal units for mothers who intend to breastfeed and meet criteria for severe socioeconomic deprivation. The team will track feasibility and acceptability measures and collect early data on breastfeeding initiation and continuation, plus practical barriers such as language or housing instability. Findings will inform whether the PRALL approach can be scaled or modified for this high-need population.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Mothers aged 18 or older with at least one infant hospitalized in the HFME maternity or neonatal unit who intend to breastfeed, are experiencing severe socioeconomic deprivation, and can communicate in French or a language spoken by available peer supporters are eligible.

Not a fit: Mothers with medical contraindications to breastfeeding, infants with known life-threatening congenital conditions, those with severe psychiatric conditions incompatible with participation, or those under legal guardianship are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could increase breastfeeding initiation and continuation and provide practical social support for mothers facing severe deprivation.

How similar studies have performed: Peer and community support programs, including models like PRALL, have shown positive effects on breastfeeding initiation and duration in other settings, though results vary and targeted evidence in severely deprived populations is limited.
