What this trial studies
Children from low-income households have higher rates of overweight and obesity and face barriers to the intensive, multi-component behavioral treatments recommended by guidelines. This interventional program refers Medicaid-insured pediatric clinic patients with overweight or obesity to structured summer day camps that include physical activity and nutrition programming. The team will measure feasibility and acceptability of the referral process, camp attendance, and basic health and behavioral outcomes over the summer at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. The approach aims to partner clinics with community programs to increase accessibility and intensity of support without framing participation as a stigmatizing 'treatment'.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Medicaid-insured children who are identified as overweight or obese during pediatric clinic visits and can attend local summer day camps.
Not a fit: Children who do not live near the Orlando area, lack transportation to camps, have medical conditions that prevent safe camp participation, or are not covered by Medicaid may not benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could provide an affordable, community-based way to reduce summer weight gain and improve activity and nutrition for low-income children with overweight or obesity.
How similar studies have performed: Some community-based and summer camp programs have shown promise for improving physical activity and weight-related behaviors, but formal clinic-to-camp referral models like this are relatively novel and not widely tested.
