What this trial studies

This study investigates the efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) at the newly established OPAT unit of Lausanne University Hospital. Patients who require intravenous antibiotic therapy but are stable enough to return home will receive treatment in an outpatient setting. The study aims to assess various models of care, including hospital-centered nursing programs and self-administration of therapy by patients. The research will span from January 2014 to December 2020, focusing on improving outpatient care delivery for infection management.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients referred to the OPAT unit who require parenteral antibiotic therapy.

Not a fit: Patients who are unable to give informed consent or refuse participation will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could provide a safer and more cost-effective alternative to inpatient treatment for patients with infections.

How similar studies have performed: Other countries have successfully implemented OPAT programs, indicating that this approach has potential based on previous successes.
