What this trial studies
This study investigates the effectiveness of an oral care program designed for residents in long-term care facilities. It employs a randomized clinical trial design with a cross-over approach, assessing various outcomes related to oral health, including cleanliness of the tongue, dental plaque, and gum health. Participants will use either an electric toothbrush or a soft bristle toothbrush, and their oral hygiene will be evaluated using established assessment tools. The study aims to improve the overall oral health and swallowing ability of elderly residents.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are elderly individuals residing in long-term care facilities who can eat by mouth and communicate effectively.
Not a fit: Patients who are unconscious, have severe dementia, or are bedridden may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly enhance the oral hygiene and overall health of elderly residents in long-term care facilities.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown positive outcomes with similar oral care interventions in elderly populations, indicating potential for success.
