Optimizing hearing aid benefits based on individual cognitive needs
The Influence of the Individual Auditory-cognitive Need on the Aided Benefit Using Different Feature Settings

What this trial studies
This clinical trial aims to enhance the effectiveness of hearing aids for first-time users aged 45-80 by adjusting features based on their auditory-cognitive profiles. Participants will be fitted with Phonak Audéo Paradise/Lumity 70 hearing aids and divided into three groups to test different feature settings, including frequency compression and noise reduction. The study will assess how cognitive functioning impacts hearing aid benefit and seeks to determine optimal fitting strategies to improve speech intelligibility and reduce listening effort. Baseline measurements will include cognitive and audiological assessments, as well as questionnaires.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are Dutch-speaking individuals aged 45-80 with age-related hearing loss who use bilateral Phonak Audéo Paradise/Lumity 70 hearing aids.
Not a fit: Patients with cochlear implants, significant neurological issues, or those on certain medications may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to personalized hearing aid settings that significantly improve speech understanding for individuals with hearing loss.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of tailoring hearing aid features based on cognitive needs is novel, similar studies have shown that personalized adjustments can improve hearing aid effectiveness.
