What this trial studies

This study aims to enhance the management of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB) across Alberta by implementing a standardized clinical care pathway. It builds on previous pilot work that demonstrated improved adherence to evidence-based care indicators through timely infectious disease consultations. The study will utilize a stepped wedge design across various acute care sites, where a centralized SAB care team will receive automated notifications of positive blood cultures for S. aureus. This approach seeks to improve patient outcomes by ensuring that all patients receive optimal care based on established guidelines.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults over 18 years old who have confirmed S. aureus bacteremia and are admitted to designated acute care sites in Alberta.

Not a fit: Patients who are deemed to have imminent or inevitable death or those transferred from out-of-province centers with a pre-existing SAB diagnosis may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could significantly reduce morbidity and mortality associated with Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown success in improving care for Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia through enhanced infectious disease consultations, indicating that this approach has potential.
