Optimal timing for infrared imaging of leg varicose veins
Observational Study to Ascertain the Optimum Time to Observe the Infra-red Image of Varicose Veins in the Lower Limb When Standing From a Supine Position.
The Whiteley Clinic · NCT07334028
This test will see if taking infrared photos every 5 seconds after a person stands shows varicose leg veins most clearly at a specific time for people having a venous ultrasound.

What this trial studies
This observational project enrolls patients already undergoing duplex ultrasound for primary or recurrent leg varicose veins. Participants rest lying down for 5 minutes, then stand and have sequential infrared (HIKMICRO M10) images taken every 5 seconds for three minutes with standardized foot placement and camera framing. The study records when varicose veins become most visible on infrared imaging and compares timing by the veins' sources. Imaging is performed at The Whiteley Clinic in Guildford during the same visit as the clinical ultrasound.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults having a venous duplex scan for suspected primary or recurrent leg varicose veins who can get on/off a couch and stand still for the imaging period and who give consent.
Not a fit: People who cannot stand unaided or remain still for the required period, or those not undergoing venous ultrasound for varicose veins, are unlikely to benefit from this imaging-timing finding.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the results could tell clinicians the best time to take infrared images so vein visibility and imaging consistency are improved during assessment.
How similar studies have performed: Infrared thermography for venous disease is relatively novel with limited published data, and the specific question of exact timing after standing has not been widely established.
