What this trial studies
This study aims to enhance the skills and confidence of family caregivers who provide support to individuals living with dementia through an online course called CAN-DO. A total of 270 caregivers will be enrolled and randomly assigned to take the course immediately or after a waiting period. Participants will engage in interviews before and after the course, with the entire study lasting six months. The program focuses on teaching caregivers how to navigate healthcare and other essential systems, thereby improving their ability to support their loved ones in community settings.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are family members or friends providing at least 4 hours of informal care per week to a community-dwelling person living with dementia.
Not a fit: Patients who may not benefit from this study include those whose caregivers plan to move them to an institutional setting within the next six months or those currently enrolled in hospice.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly empower caregivers, improving their ability to manage care for dementia patients and potentially delaying the need for institutional care.
How similar studies have performed: Preliminary efficacy data supports the CAN-DO program, indicating that similar approaches have shown promise in enhancing caregiver skills.
